Food cart awards

The 2000 Academy Awards for Carts http://www.wweekarchive.com/cheapeat00/cheapcart.html

Oh, how the carts move us with their style, their grace, their cheap
but satisfying meals. Finally, the carts get their moment in the sun.

BY CARYN B. BROOKS AND MAC MONTANDON

How do the Academy Awards come about? Members of the Cart Eaters Guild of Portland vote for the carts that best represent excellence in mobile food-producing achievement. All voting for the Academy Awards is conducted by secret ballot and tabulated by the impartial auditing firm of Unpricey Eatinghouse. The secrecy is maintained until the envelopes reach the desk of Caryn B. Brooks and Mac Montandon right before deadline.

And the winners are...

The Cheech E. Marin Lifetime Achievement Award:
Shelly's Garden Burritos

When Shelly Sandoval opened her first cart in 1991, it was a breakthrough moment. There may have been carts at Pioneer Courthouse Square, but none so vibrant, so focused, so staffed with cute people quick with the chat. In 1993 Shelly added a new term, Honkin' Huge, to our vernacular and changed the way we use condiments today. Even though the price of the Honkin' Huge has jumped from $3 to $4.50, the signature healthy tortilla stuffed with beans, rice, lettuce, guac, cheese and sour cream and topped with tomatoes is not just a part of our culture, but helps define it. It is for this reason that we bestow the Cheech E. Marin Lifetime Achievement Award on Shelly's Gardens.
